Preparing for the RIBO Level 1 exam? This book teaches you the rules behind the questions, then lets you practise on 800 original questions until 75 out of 100 is within easy reach.

The Level 1 entry-level exam for Ontario general insurance brokers has 100 scored multiple-choice questions plus unidentified pilot questions, three hours, and a pass mark of 75 per cent overall. It covers five sections: General Insurance and Industry Knowledge, Personal Lines Habitational, Travel, Personal Lines Automobile and Commercial Lines. This course is written in plain Canadian English for career changers, newcomers to Canada and anyone studying on a phone, including readers whose first language is not English.

What is inside:

  • 16 short chapters: the exam and your licence; how insurance works; the Ontario market; a broker's duties under the RIB Act and Regulation 991; statutory conditions and claims; homeowners policies; valuation, deductibles and coinsurance; water, tenants and condominiums; travel health insurance; the Ontario auto system and the OAP 1; accident benefits after the July 1, 2026 reform; Direct Compensation and fault rules; loss or damage coverages and endorsements; commercial property; commercial liability and professional lines; and exam technique with 30 worked loss cases
  • 2 appendices: the numbers to know with twenty traps and a guide to scoring the mock exams, and a plain-English glossary of property and casualty insurance
  • 800 original practice questions in 32 sets of 25, every one with the correct answer and a short explanation, including 4 full mock exams of 100 questions each in the proportions of the real exam

Rules are taken from their sources: the Registered Insurance Brokers Act, Regulation 991, the Insurance Act, the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule, the Fault Determination Rules, the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act and the Ontario Automobile Policy (OAP 1, 2026 edition). The book teaches the law as it stands in October 2026, including the auto reform of July 1, 2026. Points that could not be confirmed are written with a note to check them, and exam rules and fees can change, so check the current rules with RIBO and your exam provider before you book.

All questions are original. This is an independent study guide: it is not affiliated with RIBO, and it is not produced, endorsed or approved by RIBO, FSRA, the Insurance Institute of Canada, IBAO or any course provider. It does not replace any course and does not contain real exam questions.

Method of creation: this book was written with the help of artificial intelligence tools, under the author's direction; every rule was checked against its source text and every practice question was written for this book.
